Recommended Pathways for Aviation Education in Malaysia

Hi,Selamat Hari Malaysia, we would like to advise you as young souls where probably you are from fresh SPM leavers or Diploma/Degree leavers or anyone who want to take up aviation courses. Before that, please note that aviation industry in malaysia is small and unstable at times. Times can go bad and good depending on industry. Currently, Pilots are mostly sought after for local airlines as global shortage rises. So, don't get cheated on marketing tricks told by education institution in social media or education fairs saying aviation is the highest pay for engineering and so on. We do notice many would fall into their trap without consulting the aviation experts and seniors who are working in the field itself. First thing before signing up is to do research. I would like to share you my research, knowledge and experience for you guys to face minimal risk later on.

PILOTING

My advise is the best way now is for AIRLINE CADETSHIP by Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Singapore Airlines where you have job secured after training. SIA is the only sponsored scheme unlike AirAsia and MAB where you have to either self finance or take up loan. If you fail in the selection, keep trying and take up a degree/diploma before applying so in future you will have a back up unlike having a license only. Second option if you don't meet the requirement or fail to secure the cadetship by the age limit, you can enrol in a flight school locally, not abroad.(least advisable and 80% risk) . Cost of it would be ranging from 320k-360k depending on flying school fees. Flying schools approved by CAAM are MALAYSIAN FLYING ACADEMY, INTERNATIONAL AERO TRAINING ACADEMY (IATAC), HM AEROSPACE, LAYANG LAYANG FLYING ACADEMY. You might have to save up for it and make a plan to minimise long term RISK. You can also take up bank loan such as Bank Rakyat education loan and MBSB bank (subject to their terms and conditions). Do check out their websites for more details. You need a guarantor at least 15k salary, collateral and so on to be eligible so not everyone can afford it i guess. As a conclusion, private cadet is risky with no job security and airline cadetship is the safe way as MAB and AirAsia had arranged with financial inst for loan such as Maybank.

INTAKE STATUS :

AIRASIA : around 2019 march
MALAYSIA AIRLINES : november 2018. Planned to do yearly starting from this year.
SINGAPORE AIRLINES : all year around

ENGINEERING

To be an Licensed Aircraft Engineer/Technicians in Malaysia is tough, limited and underpaid. Better look for a alternative study programmes such as diploma/degree with license programme (CAAM PART B1/B2/A1) so you will have a back up later on. Advised to enter these training institutes:

Politeknik Banting - cheapest tuition fees with rm200 per semester for diploma in aircraft maintenance eng) and you can take up exams for caam part 66 cat A1 license
ADTECH shah alam -  abit cheaper 30k for diploma in diploma in aircraft maintenance eng with caam part 66 cat a1 license. Loan is provided by PTPK (gomen)
UniKL Miat - slightly higher fees for diploma/degree with license B1/B2. Check with them out for more details.

To be clear here, Cat A1 license holders are highly sought after low cost carriers locally such as AirAsia. While B1/B2 are oversupplied and limited. To get placement for OJT itself is an headache and hard even for jobs unless institutes have special arrangement with airlines then OK. So you gotta do a little bit of research on them. Politeknik Banting and ADTECH is the best for now since its government backing and would be stable unlike private ATOs. You see alot of universities, colleges and institutes churning out thousands of graduates with limited jobs in industry. So thats the problem now everywhere.

Aerospace Manufacturing is also good now. I can advise you to take up diploma or degree in mechanical/electrical electronics engineering to enter these companies such as Honeywell Avionics Penang, CTRM Melaka, GE Aviation, Rolls Royce, Pratt Whitney or goin for engineering roles in airlines (executives) such as Technical Services Engineer and so on. Avoid taking up aerospace engineering because it is too narrow focused. This is most recommended route for SPM/Pre Uni leavers rather than taking up license alone because you have wide of opportunities to go through rather than small focused area. If let say you have degree in mechi and suddenly aviation is not good, you can jump into other field such as oil and gas, civil and so on.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER

Get a degree in any field for officer post and you wait for the announcement from CAAM for hiring. Previously was handled by SPA last year but since privatisation of CAAM as statutory body now, they will hire directly in future. Intakes are not yearly. It would take few yeard to open up. Be patient.
